The ground has been broken at the first Crystal Lagoon to be built in the United States at Epperson in Wesley Chapel. The ceremony was attended by over one hundred people from the local community, and the toast was led by the president of Metro Development, Greg Singleton.
At the moment, the area in question is nothing more than a huge hole in the ground. However, it will soon be the site of over 3000 new homes as well as the Crystal Lagoon. This new development at Epperson will be part of the Connected City project which will eventually extend from the north of Wesley Chapel to San Antonio, Florida. Guests at the ground-breaking were able to travel in either a tethered hot air balloon or a lift to get an aerial view of the site. There is nothing to see at the moment, but with a little imagination, guests can see what it possible.
When completed, the lagoon will cover an area of 7500 acres and in some places will reach a depth of 12 meters. The average depth of the lagoon will be eight meters, and residents will be able to take part in a range of activities such as kayaking and swimming. The lagoon will make use of a unique filtration system to ensure that the water is always clean and retains the crystal blue color. This system contains over 400 sensors and is patented. The use of chemicals is restricted wherever possible, and no more water is used than would be used in the average golf course or public park.
There is much more to this development than just the lagoon though, and artists impressions were available to view at the event. One of the most anticipated buildings will be the Hub which will provide a venue for residents to get together for social occasions as well as hosting other events such as farmers markets and live entertainment including bands and outdoor movies.
