One of Switzerland’s top companies, Mettler Toledo, has decided to build a $30 million plant in Pasco, Florida. Florida’s sunny climate will be a great place to build Mettler’s product, laboratory precision scales. Students often need to measure things to a very accurate level, and Mettler profits from selling quality measuring devices to the educational and industrial centers of the world. Bill Cronin, CEO of the Pasco Economic Development Council, was quite pleased at the announcement. Having foreign companies setting up shop is exactly what Pasco County needs to further its economic growth.
The new factory should employ 500 people in making the precision scales. Their product will help the laboratories of the United States have good devices when it comes to doing experiments and measurements. Viggio Nelsen, a general manager at Mettler Toledo, observed that 15 years of growing had required that they expand their operations to meet market demand. The Pasco plant will be finished in Fall 2017. Mettler Toledo is a large company. It employs 13,500 employees and provides measuring devices for customers in 39 countries. Figuring out the amount of the investment required to further growth in Florida was possibly a challenge for Mettler, but apparently, they were able to do so with confidence based on their previous market experience in the U.S.
Nielsen commented how they want the staff at the Pasco plant to be well educated and diverse. This is a good thing, in an U.S. labor market that is historically known for preferential treatment of white workers. The plant should set an industry standard for quality manufacture and design in the measuring scale industry. Florida will continue to benefit from the Mettler’s financial investment.
